Hi there. We are halfway through the week!!!
Today we had great fun in science class making our origami hurricanes. We will finish those up tomorrow. Super cool, and we also snuck in some geometry too when looking at the shapes all the folds made. We will do origami every once in awhile. The hardest part for kids is trying it. They are so worried about messing it up, that they don't want to try. They also want to get it the first time. They need to just relax, watch me do it, and then try it themselves. They were getting it pretty quickly by the end. We will display the finished products in the hall before they come home. We will be doing a final "what did you learn abut hurricanes" writing piece next week to end our hurricane unit. Then onto the water cycle.
In math, we are rounding numbers. Here is a very cool and a bit corny youtube on how to do it. I will play it for the kids tomorrow as Mrs. Hankins just shared it with me today after school. But, feel free to watch it with your kiddo tonight. If you do, and then THEY CAN SHOW YOU how to round 35,467 to the ten thousands place then write the answer in their planner for a $50 bonus at tomorrow's check in.
Today we talked about courage. We spoke about the article in the newspaper today about Dr. Beeman. As you might have saw in the Gazette picture I attended the walk of support and the board meeting last night. We talked about how it takes courage to stand up for what you believe in, both for and against. We also talked about how my number one passion of being a teacher is standing up for kids when they don't have a voice. I then also showed them a video of me doing the bungee drop in CA Six Flags. That took a TON of courage. We defined courage as pressing forward even when fear is present. Finally, I had them write a statement telling me when they had courage. Here are a few...
It took Mackayla courage to go on the Hollywood Hotel ride at Disneyland.
It took Alyssa courage to go on the diving board at Rose Park Pool.
