Today all kids have math homework. They are working on expanded form of numbers. I tell them it is like taking a number and stretching it like a slinkey. Here is an example to help you understand how to help them. Take the number 4,256. Now, stretch it out by place value. So in expanded form it is 4,000+200+50+6. This should help them do their homework practice problems tonight. It should be in their take home folder. There will be a quiz tomorrow.
We started talking about Hurricanes in science today. We talked about a very scary job: the storm tracker pilot. Ask your child how many times a pilot has to fly into a hurricane to get an accurate reading. Write the number in their planner for a $10 bonus at tomorrow's check in.
Book orders went home today. They will be available every month. We talked about how mom and dad might be low on cash right now due to the start of school, and that they may have better luck next month. But, they are there and they are fantastic. There are two different order forms. They can order from either or both. I will send home a sheet tomorrow on how to order online. This is the preferred way, because then I earn points to order classroom books. We had some awesome and fun books last year to share! You can send in cash and the order form if you want though. Just put it in an envelope with their name on it. Book orders are due September 9th. Students that order will earn $100 fake dollars per book ordered. This is only ONE way kids earn money, and there should be NO pressure to do so. It is totally on a volunteer basis. Enjoy!
Some of the kids were interested in becoming a WISH tutor. If your child did they received information from Mrs. Zimmerman today. It is a great program to help little kids learn to become better readers. 6th and 5th graders are selected first, and then if more are needed they come to 4th. Those slips are due back on Monday.
Lastly, I really hope that this blog is helpful. I really want you to know what is going on. Please know that I know you are busy.
