Hi. Happy Monday before Thanksgiving! I hope you had a great day!
Above, you will find a small slideshow of my reading kids doing some fun native projects. We have been studying four different tribes in our small groups: Choctaws, Seminole, Navajo, and the Inuits. All four groups were given the opportunity to create a tribal craft and a tribal treat. They had a lot of fun with both. We also learned a ton from the books we read and discussed. We focussed on main idea, sequencing, and problem/action/result skills as well. Kids will take their final tests tomorrow! We took the test before we started, so I am hoping to see all 100% tomorrow. Then, onto our new novel Riding Freedom.
Today, we took our final science unit test. So far, so good. I can tell who was listening in class and on the field trip that is for sure!
As you know, we have been working hard on working hard in the 4th grade. I have a feeling that there are going to be some very sad kiddos come Polar Express Day if some kids don't step it up a notch in here. Handwriting needs to slow down and become neater, desks need to stop overflowing with junk and papers, names need to be written on papers, and some need to all together act like they belong in the 4th grade. There is no time in here for goofing around. We can have fun learning, but silliness and class clown antics are not welcome. I will continue to watch up until the day, but I hope kids realize that I am serious about not attending if they don't earn it. So, how are they doing at home? If you had to decide today if your child could attend the Polar Express Day based on your expectations of them at home, would they make it or do they need to step it up? Have a discussion about this tonight and write yes or no in the planner for a $20 reward tomorrow. Getting your permission is part of the buy in as well. (By the way, most kids are doing awesome in here. It is a few that need to work on it, but everyone can always improve even more.)
We have gym tomorrow. Please help put shoes in the bags instead of boots. Thanks.
Tomorrow is a half day, so kids are dismissed at noon. Then they are off for Thanksgiving break until next Monday. Speaking of Thanksgiving and being thankful...would you mind sharing with me why you are thankful that your child has me as their teacher. I could use some positive words in my world right now. As you know, I lost my sister this summer and this is my first holiday that I won't hear her voice or see her beautiful face. The thought of even making it through this week is hard for me to imagine, as her son is with my other sister as well. So, happy thoughts shared with me would really help me get through the days to come knowing that I am appreciated and am making a difference in this world. You could either write them in the planner or on a piece of paper that I could read over and over again during the break. Thanks.
Lastly, the otter project expectations and directions sheet went home today. Your child selected a season through a random drawing process. They need to create a 3D display of the otter in Montana during that season. My only guidelines are that it be bigger than a kids shoebox, it be realistic, and that it show what they have learned. We did so much with otters that this should just be a fun way to share what they have in their heads. Projects are due Thursday, Dec 1st. (No earlier and no later please).
Have a super night. Enjoy the sunshine!!
